What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are small tags you add to the end of a URL — utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign — that tell Google Analytics exactly where a visitor came from. Without them, all your newsletter clicks, Instagram bio taps and paid ads blur together into "direct" or "referral" traffic, and you can't tell which marketing actually works.

With them, your analytics reports split cleanly: you'll see that the October newsletter drove 340 visits while the Instagram story drove 90, and you can stop guessing where to spend your effort. The two optional tags go further — utm_term records which paid keyword triggered an ad, and utm_content distinguishes between two links in the same email (like "banner_a" vs "text_link").

The catch is consistency. "Email", "email" and "e-mail" look like three different mediums in your reports. Pick lowercase, underscore-separated naming once — october_sale, not "October Sale!" — and stick to it everywhere. This builder enforces that automatically: it lowercases your values, replaces spaces with underscores, and URL-encodes special characters, so every link you generate follows the same clean convention.

One rule of thumb: never use UTM tags on internal links within your own site — they're for external traffic only. Tagging your own navigation pollutes your data by starting a new "session" every click.
