What is JSON and why does it break so often?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard way apps and APIs exchange data — your weather app, your Shopify store's checkout, and most website contact forms all speak JSON behind the scenes. It's simple by design, but brutally strict: one trailing comma, one unquoted key, or one smart quote pasted from a Word doc, and the whole thing refuses to parse.

That's why a formatter matters. When an API returns an error or a config file won't load, the problem is almost always a tiny syntax mistake hiding in a wall of text. Pretty-printing with indentation and color coding makes the structure visible, so the missing bracket or stray comma jumps out immediately instead of hiding.

Minifying does the opposite job: it strips every unnecessary space and line break, shrinking the data for faster transfer. Use pretty-printed JSON while you're reading and debugging, and minified JSON when you're shipping to production.

This tool validates as you format and explains errors in plain English — pointing at the rough position of the problem instead of dumping a cryptic parser message. Like everything here, it runs entirely in your browser: your data is never uploaded, which matters when you're debugging API responses containing real user information.
