What is a favicon and why does it matter?
A favicon is the tiny icon that appears in the browser tab next to your page title, in bookmarks, and on phone home screens. It's a small detail with an outsized effect: sites with a proper favicon look finished and trustworthy, while sites without one show a generic blank page icon that quietly says "unfinished".
Different places need different sizes. Browsers use 16×16 and 32×32 pixel icons in tabs and address bars. iPhones and Android phones use the 180×180 apple-touch-icon when someone saves your site to their home screen. If you only provide one size, devices scale it themselves — often with blurry results.
